Hope to see many of you at noon at Holyoke Medical Center, Monday, 12/23 for a press conference & rally launching a renewed campaign to get healthcare providers of western MA to stand up for their colleagues in Gaza. The CEO of Holyoke Medical Center, Spiro Hatiras, has refused to meet with us (River Valley for Gaza Healthcare), or to issue a statement about Gaza.

There is a new national mobilization called Doctors Against Genocide that is putting a strong wind under the wings of pro-Palestine healthcare providers and consumers to break the shameful silence of American medicine, and join in the demands for arms embargo, end to occupation, ceasefire, end to blockade, massive sustained shipment of humanitarian and medical aid, etc. Working on the McCarthyite Zionism of the enormous US healthcare establishment is going to be a very powerful way of supporting Gaza and Palestine.

See you on Monday, 12/23, noon, at the sidewalk sign in front of Holyoke Medical Center, 575 Beech St, Holyoke, on the sidewalk by the big hospital sign! Bring your righteous anger.

One year ago today, an anti-Palestinian hate crime took place in Burlington, VT.

Jason Eaton shot Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid, and Tasheen Aliahmad because they were wearing keffiyehs and speaking Arabic. Despite this, both the corporate media and the prosecution deny that it was a hate crime.

This act of hate reverberated across Vermont. Not letting fear win, we made our movement even stronger. No longer able to claim that Palestine is not a ‘local issue,’ hundreds more were moved to join the struggle against Zionism. Still, this had–and continues to have–a tremendous impact on our Palestinian siblings. As always, we extend our solidarity to our Palestinian comrades–hate will never win; we won’t be silenced!

JUSTICE FOR HISHAM, KINNAN, AND TAHSEEN!🇵🇸✊

#freepalestine #vermont #burlington #socialism #votesocialist2024 #claudiakarina2024

Join us on January 20th at 3pm EST for an in-depth discussion with @roderickferguson94 about the relationship between modern genocides and student protests 🔥

This workshop turns to the history of the targeting of civilian populations in 20th century wars as a means of deterrence and subjugation. Historically, student protests have been ways to acknowledge and decry modern war’s pursuit of those populations. We will discuss how the criminalization of student protests has been a response to that acknowledgment and denunciation.

Roderick A. Ferguson is the William Robertson Coe Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and American Studies at Yale University. He is the author of One-Dimensional Queer (@politybooks 2018), We Demand: The University and Student Protests (@uc_press 2017), The Reorder of Things: The University and Its Pedagogies of Minority Difference (@uminnpress 2012), and Aberrations in Black: Toward a Queer of Color Critique (@uminnpress 2004).

All proceeds from our workshops benefit collectives and initiatives on the ground in Gz that are sustaining life amidst world-ending violence by distributing food, water, tents, medication, and even providing educational activities to children. We view these opportunities to gather and learn together as a chance to pool our resources to materially support the Palestinian people.

Please donate generously! Ali grew up in Tuba, Masafer Yatta, which he says is one of the most amazing places to grow up in. It’s community oriented and has beautiful family traditions. Growing up there also meant constantly facing military and settler violence and a threat of demolitions and evictions. Yet, he told me that no year compares to this past year. But also, nothing will separate him from his home. Ali was recently featured in Ta-Nehisi Coates new book which includes a section about the West Bank. Come hear Ali speak with us in his own worlds on Tuesday. There will be time for questions as well! Link to sign up in linktree in bio! #zoom #zoomtalk #masaferyatta #westbank

Please join Alicia Sanders-Zakre of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons for a discussion of her 2024 report "Israeli Nuclear Weapons: Risks, Consequences and Disarmament.
Israel is one of nine countries with nuclear weapons. Despite widespread acknowledgement by experts and former government officials of their existence, Israel and many Western governments maintain a policy of ambiguity about Israeli nuclear weapons. This pretense cannot continue. Nuclear disarmament is an essential component of a lasting peace agreement between Israel and Palestine, and in the region more broadly. Alicia Sanders-Zakre authored a report in September 2024 called "Israeli Nuclear Weapons: Risks, Consequences and Disarmament." She brings us what she learned and her expertise on nuclear weapons in general.

Alicia Sanders-Zakre is the Policy and Research Coordinator at the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. She directs and coordinates research on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons and general nuclear weapons policy.

Previously, she was a researcher at the Arms Control Association and at the Brookings Institution. She has published over 100 news articles, editorials and reports on nuclear weapons and provided expert analysis for newspapers and radio programs. We invite you to join our next book group meeting to discuss the first 5 chapters of: “An Army Like No Other: How the Israel Defense Forces Made a Nation” by Haim Bresheeth-Zabner, published in 2020. In this fascinating history, Bresheeth charts the evolution of the IDF from the Nakba to the continued assaults upon Gaza, and shows that the state of Israel has been formed out of its wars. He also gives an account of his own experiences as a young conscript during the 1967 war. He argues that the army is embedded in all aspects of daily life and identity, and that we should not merely see it as a fighting force enjoying an international reputation, but as the central ideological, political and financial institution of Israeli society. As a consequence, we have to reconsider our assumptions on what any kind of peace might look like.

The JVP-DC Metro Book Group meets on the 2nd Sunday (almost) every month to discuss a book related to Palestine and select our book for the following month.
